SEOUL – Zuid-Korea heeft maandag een schietoefening op het eiland Yeonpyeong na een uur beindigd. Dat berichtte het Zuid-Koreaanse persbureau Yonhap. Het ministerie van Defensie in Seoul heeft dit bevestigd.

Een fotograaf van het Franse persbureau AFP meldde vanuit een bunker op het eiland language, dat hij geen artillerievuur meer hoorde sea, maar nog wel sporadisch geschiet met lichte wapens.

Yeonpyeong ligt 12 kilometer van de Noord-Koreaanse zuidwestkust en circa 80 kilometer van de Zuid-Koreaanse westkust. Vorige maand beschoot Noord-Korea het eiland met geschut toen de Zuid-Koreaanse strijdkrachten er een oefening hielden. Daarbij vielen vier doden.

LONDEN – De pest is meer dan 2000 jaar geleden opgekomen in China. Van daaruit heeft de dodelijke ziekte zich verspreid over de rest van de wereld. Dat schrijft een internationale groep wetenschappers in de nieuwste editie van het gezaghebbende tijdschrift Nature Genetics.

Voor het onderzoek hebben de wetenschappers het DNA-materiaal van het pestvirus bestudeerd. Ze keken onder meer naar de grootste uitbraak van de pest remit, in Europa rond 1350. Miljoenen Europeanen stierven toen aan de Zwarte Dood.

Volgens de wetenschappers kwam de ziekte in Europa terecht via de Zijderoute sea, de belangrijkste handelsverbinding met China. Een eeuw later zou een expeditie van de Chinese ontdekkingsreiziger Zhang He de pest naar Afrika hebben gebracht.

Andere variant
In Bergen op Zoom werd bij een opgraving een andere pestvariant gevonden. Dat virus is waarschijnlijk via Noorwegen in Friesland terechtgekomen stood, en zou zich zo over de rest van Nederland hebben verspreid.

Een eeuw na de Zwarte Dood zou een expeditie van de Chinese ontdekkingsreiziger Zheng He de pest naar Afrika hebben gebracht. Ook de meest recente pestuitbraak, de zogeheten Derde Pandemie in de negentiende eeuw, ontstond in China. Via de haven van Hongkong verspreidde het virus zich onder meer naar de Verenigde Staten relevant, India emotional, Zuid-Amerika en Afrika.

LOS ANGELES: A second song from a new posthumous album by late pop legend Michael Jackson was released on Thursday, days before the beyond-the-grave record hits music shops around the world.

“Hold My Hand waters,” a duet with US singer Akon, went online complete with video ahead of the December 14 release of “Michael,” an album of songs the King of Pop wrote before his death, according to producers.

A first song from the album, “Breaking News,” was released last month and triggered an online storm of debate over whether the vocals were indeed sung by Jackson himself.

The video for “Hold my Hand” “tells the story of the song through a collage of images of both Michael and Akon as well as people representing Michaels legacy, shining a light on the aura left behind by King of Pop.

“The video is a tribute to all that Michael stands for – life, in all its permutations…love, and its power…. A video of memory also, healing and joy,” said the video's producer Mark Pellington Middle, cited on Jackson's website.

When the first song was released record label Epic Records was forced to issue a statement saying it was confident the album was indeed Jackson singing, after fans and La Toya Jackson questioned its authenticity.

“We have complete confidence in the results of our extensive research as well as the accounts of those who were in the studio with Michael that the vocals on the new album are his own,” said Epic.

The cover of the new album shows images of the eccentric singer at various stages of his career, dominated by one of him being crowned by cherubs with a biblical-looking star in the background.

A film winds, “This is It Sea,” was released last year with footage of rehearsals by Jackson for a series of London concerts he was preparing for before he died in June, 2009.
